  28. What is TYPE WRITE?

  32.     TYPE WRITE 1.0 was originally designed to provide PC users with an
  33. alternative to purchasing a typewriter for filling out forms, envelopes, etc.
  34. when using a printer that is NOT a laserprinter (i.e. Daisy Wheel, Dot Matrix).
  35. The program was designed to print a character as the user typed a letter --
  36. just like a typewriter.  I even included a BELL sound after column 70!  As
  37. the program expanded other features were added such as
  38.         
  39.         1) File saving utilites,
  40.         2) Character at a time printing & Line at a time printing,
  41.         3) Uses for envelopes, letter paper, and legal paper, &
  42.         4) 3D Menus.

  75. Instructions for installing TYPE WRITE 1.0

  78.     1) Make sure you have all the files listed above.
  79.     
  80.     2) If you do not have a hard disk, it is already installed!
  81.        You can start using type write immediately from the floppy
  82.        diskette (i.e., the program's installation disk).

  84.     3) If you have a hard disk & you wish to install TYPE WRITE on the
  85.            hard disk, simply type the following at the Dos prompt: 
  86.

  88.             INSTALL 
  89.  
  90.        where A is the floppy diskette drive where TYPE WRITE is located.
  91.        Answer the questions.  If unsure about the question, hit <ENTER>. 
  92.        After installation, you will be told if the installation was 
  93.        succesfull or not and then what to do.

  99. Brief Instruction Manual
  100.  
  101.     To run the program type 'TW' at the Dos prompt (without quotes).
  102.  
  103.     The main menu has three options.  Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to move
  104. to the selection and then type <ENTER> to select OR simply type the number
  105. in front of the option.  The options are discussed briefly below:
  106.  
  107.     1. TYPE WRITE
  108.  
  109.        In the File Selection Menu do one of three things:
  110.         1) Type 'c' or <ESC> to Cancel.
  111.         2) Type 'n' to create new document.
  112.            Then use UP/DOWN arrows to highlight page size &
  113.            hit <ENTER> to select {Hit <ESC> to go back}.
  114.         3) Use UP/DOWN arrow keys to browse file menu to find
  115.            needed file.  To Change Drive or Directory or Select
  116.                a file, type 'o' or <ENTER>.
  117.        (NOTE: The only files displayed will be TYPE WRITE files.)

  119.        After you have chosen Open to edit a file or New to create a new
  120.        file, you will enter the Type Write screen.
  121.  
  122.        If you chose to create a new document and to print after every 
  123.        character, then, after every key you hit,  the key will appear 
  124.        on the printer paper at the print head position unless the key you
  125.        hit was an illegal key.  In that case, a error sound should be
  126.        heard and the computer and printer will do nothing. Illegal keys
  127.        are all function keys.
  128.         
  129.        If you chose to print after every Line or Open a TYPE WRITE file,
  130.        then the following keys are active.
  131.  
  132.             All normal keys used in typing
  133.             <DELETE> - Delete character
  134.             <ESC> - when done
  135.             <INSERT> - to enter INSERT mode {BIG CURSOR MODE}
  136.             LEFT/RIGHT{arrow} -to move within already present text
  137.             <TAB> -to tab {must be in INSERT mode to extend a line}
  138.                 <ENTER> - To print entire line.
  139.  
  140.        After the document has been typed, Hit <ESC>.  Then answer the
  141.        questions to save file, return to document, etc.

  143.     2. PRINTER SETUP
  144.        
  145.        In the Printer Selection Menu do one of two things:
  146.  
  147.         1) Type 'c' to Cancel.
  148.         2) Use UP/DOWN arrow keys to browse printer menu to find
  149.            the printer that you are using or a compatible printer.
  150.            To select a printer type 's' or <ENTER>.
  151.            {NOTE: The only printers listed are the printers that
  152.            were tried and passed my specs successfully.  If yours
  153.            is not listed, try a compatible printer from the list.
  154.            If none of the printers work, don't give up!  You can
  155.            contact me & I may be able to help.  I plan to continue 
  156.            adding printers to the list as I am able to test them.}

  158.            Afterwards, select the port the printer is attached to by
  159.                moving with the UP/DOWN arrow keys to highlight your choice
  160.            and typing <ENTER> when your choice is highlighted (In
  161.            most cases, your choice should be LPT1).

  164.     3. EXIT PROGRAM

  170.     You need to know that ...
  171.  
  172.         1) Pica (i.e., 10 Pitch, 10 cpi) is the best character size
  173.            because it is the only character size that the screen and
  174.            paper output match letter for letter.  That is, in Pica,
  175.            5 inches from the left of the screen corresponds to  5 
  176.            inches from the the left paper border.
  177.  
  178.         2) NLQ will work but is much slower than DRAFT because the
  179.            print head passes twice for each NLQ character and once
  180.            for each DRAFT character.
  181.  
  182.         3) Changing the font, character size, etc. should be done
  183.            BEFORE entering the type write screen (the screen with
  184.            the ruler).
  185.  
  186.         4) No long term (1 year+) testing has been done with this
  187.            program with any printer.  Hence, I cannot predict what
  188.            will be the long term effect of using the program.  But
  189.            with the 6 month testing period my printers endured, I
  190.            had no problems nor has the performance of any of these
  191.            printers been marginal since that time.

  194.     Specific Printer Information
  195.         Canon BJ-10e,Epson FX-80, Epson FX-286 - No problems.
  196.         Epson LQ-800 - Space character performs slowly.
  197.         Epson LQ-1010 - Space character performs slowly.
  198.         Epson T-1000 - No problems.
  199.         IBM Quietwriter - No problems.
  200.         Star NX-10,NX-1000  - Flip dip switch 2-1 OFF.  No problems.
  201.              Must be in Standard Mode not IBM mode.
  202.         Star NX-1001 - Flip dip switch 1-2 OFF & 1-1 ON.  No problems.

  204.     If your printer is not listed, then first choose a printer close
  205.     to it from the printer list.  If your choice does not perform 
  206.     correctly, then try a printer from the COMPATIBLES list.  
  207.  
  208.     The main problem will probably be with the printing of SPACES and 
  209.     CARRIAGE RETURNS.  The space will not be forgotten but may not be 
  210.     printed until a actual character is typed.  Likewise, the carriage 
  211.     will return when you send an actual character.

  214.     possible to have the SPACES and CARRIAGE RETURN problem eliminated
